Byers, Jr., USN (Ret.), honoring his exceptional leadership, unwavering dedication to duty, and enduring contributions to the Navy, Naval Special Warfare, and the nation.

The Admiral Arleigh Burke Leadership Award recognizes an outstanding leader from government, industry or academia whose life is in keeping with the example set by Admiral Burke, a true American hero whose professional achievements, ethical standards and unselfish dedication to his calling and his country personify all that is noble in the American character.

Throughout a distinguished 21-year career, Master Chief Byers exemplified the highest ideals of military service. As a Navy SEAL, he consistently demonstrated excellence in the most demanding environments, leading by example with integrity, resolve, and selfless commitment to mission and team.

His heroic actions during a 2012 hostage rescue operation in Afghanistan, for which he received the Medal of Honor, stand as a testament to his valor and character. Under enemy fire, he displayed extraordinary bravery and determination, saving an American hostage while placing himself in grave danger. This mission reflected the ethos with which he served every day—prioritizing the mission and his teammates above all else.

Since retiring from active duty, Master Chief Byers has continued to lead and serve. Utilizing his platform as a Medal of Honor recipient, he has advocated for veterans, supported military families, and inspired future leaders. His involvement with non-profits, veteran organizations, and leadership forums underscores his ongoing commitment to service and responsibility to give back.

Master Chief Byers remains a strong voice for Naval Special Warfare, helping to preserve its values and shape its future. In every role—addressing policymakers, mentoring youth, or advising senior leaders—he embodies the principles of honor, courage, and commitment.

His enduring impact mirrors the legacy of Admiral Arleigh Burke: decisive leadership, relentless pursuit of excellence, and a life defined by service. For his remarkable military career, valor in combat, and continued influence on the Navy and the nation, the Navy League is honored to present the Arleigh Burke Leadership Award to Master Chief Edward C.
